Is the drum skin of the permanent magnet drum magnetic separator worn out quickly and replaced frequently? Hardness and sealing are the main factors

2026-08-29

The permanent magnet drum magnetic separator has a high frequency of use in quartz sand iron removal ring joints, and frequent replacement due to wear of the drum skin is a concern for many production lines. Quartz sand has high hardness and sharp edges, and the cylinder skin rubs against it for a long time, resulting in a much faster wear rate than processing other minerals. Every time the casing is replaced, the magnetic system needs to be disassembled and recalibrated, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and affects production.

The insufficient hardness of the shell material is the primary reason for rapid wear and tear. The hardness of ordinary 304 stainless steel cylinder skin is only about HRC20, and groove like abrasion marks will quickly appear under continuous erosion of quartz sand, and the magnetic penetration effect will also decrease accordingly. It is recommended to use wear-resistant stainless steel (such as 2Cr13 quenched and tempered treatment) with a hardness of HRC30 or above, or directly weld a wear-resistant layer on the surface of the cylinder. The ceramic coated rollers provided by some manufacturers are also worth considering, as their wear resistance can be improved several times. To determine whether the cylinder skin needs to be replaced, you can use a caliper to measure the thickness of the cylinder skin when the machine is stopped - when the wear is close to one-third of the original thickness, it should be arranged to be replaced, don't wait until it is worn through before dealing with it.

Sealing failure leading to slurry infiltration can also accelerate internal damage. After the aging or wear of the sealing rings at both ends of the cylinder, the slurry seeps into the interior of the cylinder, which not only corrodes the magnetic yoke and magnetic block fixing parts, but also causes the magnetic block to demagnetize due to moisture. The sealing ring should be inspected quarterly and replaced immediately if hardening or cracking is found. When installing a new cylinder cover, it is necessary to ensure that the cover is clean and free of scratches, and apply an appropriate amount of sealant. After installation, calibrate with a level to ensure that the drum is parallel to the material trough and the deviation is controlled within 1mm.

If abnormal grooves or periodic impact sounds are found on the surface of the drum during daily inspections, it is likely that the drum skin has been severely worn and the internal magnetic block may have become loose. Immediate shutdown and comprehensive inspection are required. Shanlu Heavy Industry has accumulated rich experience in the field of quartz sand magnetic separation equipment, and can recommend suitable cylinder skin materials and maintenance cycles based on material characteristics.
