Flat plate magnetic separators are commonly used in wet iron removal from
quartz sand, but clogging of the medium plate is the most common concern
reported by customers. The magnetic separation effect is getting worse and the
processing capacity is also decreasing, and the root cause is mostly on the
medium plate.
The pressure of the flushing water is insufficient, and the magnetic material
cannot be cleaned thoroughly. After the medium plate adsorbs iron impurities, it
needs to be washed away with flushing water. When the water pressure is below
0.2 MPa, the magnetic substances adsorbed in the gaps of the medium cannot be
completely removed, and they accumulate more and more until the flow channel is
blocked. It is recommended to install a pressure gauge on the flushing water
pipeline to ensure a stable water pressure of 0.3-0.5MPa. Remove the medium
plate and inspect it once a week. If hardened iron mud lumps are found between
the gaps, it indicates that the flushing effect is not up to standard and the
nozzle needs to be cleaned or pressurized.
The feed concentration is too high, and the load on the medium plate is too
high. When the slurry concentration exceeds 30%, a large amount of magnetic
material rushes towards the medium plate in a short period of time, and the
adsorption capacity exceeds the flushing capacity, causing the medium plate to
saturate and block prematurely. Suggest controlling the feed concentration
between 20% and 25%. A concentration meter can be installed in front of the
magnetic separator for real-time monitoring, and the water replenishment valve
can be adjusted appropriately when the concentration is too high.
If it is found during daily inspections that the iron content in the
concentrate has significantly increased after magnetic separation, or if a thick
layer of iron mud adheres to the surface of the medium plate after removal, it
indicates that the blockage is severe and the machine should be stopped
immediately for cleaning. When cleaning, first use a high-pressure water gun to
roughly rinse, and stubborn lumps can be dissolved in 5% dilute hydrochloric
acid for a short period of time before rinsing.
